The end of the calendar year brings thoughts of year end reviews and goal setting for the upcoming year. The kindred heart writers have an ongoing joke about Goals – we usually don’t use that word (I will probably get in trouble for even writing it on the blog!) but we affectionately call it - the “G” word. For 2010 I have begun a “G” list of a different type. In addition to what I would like to accomplish next year I also have a few things I do NOT want to do.
1. I will not check my email or get on the internet until I have worked on at least one writing project. I have a tendency to get so sucked into cyberspace that half the morning is gone before I get started. The lost momentum and early morning energy is difficult to regain once I run down all those endless bunny trails of information overload. What a waste of the precious gift of time!
2. I will not eat while working on my keyboard. Sometimes a box of crackers or potato chips will follow me back into my office and sneak into my mouth. (I really think it is a conspiracy of some sorts) Mindless munching makes for a monstrous midriff.
3. I will not let discouragement, rejection, and self pity stop me from focusing on God. Too often I let my feelings drag me down and I concentrate on the negative. I find His hope and acceptance when I set my ego aside and keep my eyes fixed on God.
4. I will not let my writing and my never-ending to-do list interfere with my interacting with people. I hide in my office in the back of the house for hours at times neglecting family and friends. People take priority over paper.
5. I will not sit all day long writing at my desk and all evening in front of the mind numbing TV screen (unless NCIS is on.) I will move about more often between projects and will walk some each day. Sit never leads to fit!
So there you have it: my not to do list. Feel free to ask me later in the year how I am doing as I would appreciate the accountability.
What is on your no-no list for 2010?
Jeanie

Well here we go...you have used the "G" word. Is nothing sacred?
:-) Seriously, I think I will just add these to my to-not-do list. Thanks for the list. Excellent post as usual.
A reluctant "g" maker.

Clella you are so funny. I will convince you to be a G maker yet.
footnote: beside not eating at the computer I have also added drinking as I ruined a key board yesterday with coffee. grrrrrrr
But if you don't go down all those rabbit trails, who will send the rest of us all those intriguing internet links?
My not-to-do? I won't let papers pile up (and up and up). If they aren't worth filing immediately, in the trash they go!
Jeanie, I have a sneaky feeling you will complete your "not" objectives. A complete twist of thinking, I love it! Are those called, "NG?"
